Description

Propionyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring carnitine derivative formed by carnitine acetyltransferase during β-oxidation of uneven chain fatty acids, which has been shown to improve the heart′s mechanical recovery and other metabolic parameters after ischemia-reperfusion. It stimulates energy production in ischemic muscles by increasing citric acid cycle flux and by stimulating pyruvate dehydrogenase activity and also demonstrates free radical scavenging activity. Propionyl-L-carnitine hydrochloride, also known as PLCAR or Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine, is a compound that belongs to the family of carnitine derivatives. Carnitine is an amino acid-like substance that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism and is involved in the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the cellular powerhouses where they are oxidized for energy production.
