General Description
Bialaphos is a naturally occurring herbicide synthesized by Streptomyces hygroscopicus and Streptomyces viridochromeogenes. It is comprised of two alanine residues and the glutamic acid analog, phosphinothricin, and is commonly used as a gene selector in plants transformed with the bar (Basta) gene. Bialaphos acts as a prodrug by separating into individual subunits of alanylalanine and phosphinothricin. It is cytotoxic and acts by accumulating ammonia while inhibiting photosynthesis and glutamine synthesis. This broad-spectrum tripeptide antibiotic has efficacy against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as certain fungal plant pathogens.
