Description
General Description
Blasticidin, a nucleoside antibiotic synthesized by Streptomyces griseochromogenes, belongs to the aminoacylnucleoside class of antibiotics. It is a potent translational inhibitor in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, known to target and inhibit protein synthesis leading to rapid cell death at low antibiotic concentrations. It causes significant inhibition of peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis and in-part, contributes to inhibition of peptide bond formation. E. coli strains are usually sensitive to drug concentrations of 50 µg/ml, while mammalian cells are sensitive to concentrations as low as 2-10 µg/ml.
Applications:
- Selection agent for transformed cells with resistance genes bls, bsr, or BSD
- Used to study protein synthesis at the level of peptide bond formation
