General Description
A non denaturing zwitterionic detergent with characteristics similar to CHAPS, although more soluble due to a more polar head group. Useful for the solubilization of integral membrane proteins. CHAPSO has been used in a study to assess the processes of liposome solubilization and reconstitution of two transport proteins. It has also been used in a study to investigate a novel bicelle system for orienting macromolecules over a wide temperature range. It can be used for solubilization of membrane proteins. Both CHAPS and CHAPSO have a low light absorbance in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is useful for monitoring ongoing chemical reactions or protein-protein binding with UV/Vis spectroscopy.
