Description
General description
D-methionine is a member of the chemical class known as Alpha Amino Acids and Derivatives (amino group is attached to the alpha carbon), and an optically active form of methionine having D-configuration; it is a D-alpha-amino acid. Methionine is an essential amino acid in humans, required for growth and tissue repair. It is a sulfur containing amino acid required for various detoxifying processes and helps with the improved tone and pliability of skin, hair, and nails. It readily chelates and aids in the excrement of heavy metals such as lead and mercury. Importantly, it acts as a lipotropic agent to prevent excess fat buildup in the liver. While L-methionine effectively inhibits D-methionine uptake, D-methionine exerts little to no effect on the L-isomer uptake.
