D-Luciferin is mainly produced in bioluminescent organisms and can easily circulate across the blood testis barrier, blood brain barrier and the blood placenta barrier. This small molecule is sensitive to light and oxygen. D-Luciferin is also sensitive to moisture in its powder form.Â
D-Luciferin is the natural substrate of luciferase (Luc), catalyzing the characteristic yellow-green light emission in fireflies. The 560 nm chemiluminescence produced by this reaction peaks within seconds and is proportional to the luciferase concentration when the substrate is in excess.
D-Luciferin sodium is readily soluble in aqueous buffers, chemiluminescent after oxidation by luciferase. It is used as a substrate in luciferin−luciferase chemiluminescence assay to determine ATP levels.
Substrate for firefly luciferase with a Km of about 2 μM.
